Day of the Dead or “Día de los Muertos” is a particularly magical time in the city of Oaxaca, located in Southern Mexico. Oaxaca City is steeped in rich traditions and Día de Muertos is one of the biggest celebrations of the year.
Oaxaca Day of the Dead celebrations take place over several days. The main events take place from October 31st to November 2nd, but there are related activities that take place before and after these dates. Different villages have different customs around the celebration.
During this celebration, there are especial flowers, (flor de muerto), mole negro or colorado, bread of the dead, skulls full of colours, Catrinas (The Elegant Female skeleton) every where in downtown.
I loved this celebration when I was a kid. I loved to go the markets and to buy everything for our altar at home: fruit, bread, candles, flowers, and of course, my favorite ones, the skulls.
Now, that I am older, l love it even more, just thinking that my father ( who died 20 years ago) will come to my house, the idea makes me so happy. So, my family set up the Altar as my mom used to do it when I was a kid.
